Cockatoo Caravan & Platypus Grove

Additions to the “Home Together” Series

Last year I began a new series of designs called “Home Together”, where I celebrated the fauna with whom we share our environments. It’s been such fun to stitch some very Australian scenes, as each of the designs also contains a built element.

These two additions portray a very familiar neighbour, and a very elusive one.

Growing up in the Blue Mountains, Cockatoos were always around. I’ll always remember my grandmother bemoaning their destruction of her verandah rain (they tore up her wooden railing!), while still feeding them! And my father always called them “the pterodactyls” when we heard them screeching by…

In this design, they’re demolishing some Bunya Pine nuts (with the trees in the distance). I had in mind one of those beachside caravan spots, with a picnic table, pine needles turning into sand underfoot and the screech and antics of the Cockatoos overhead.

The second design, “Platypus Grove”, features an animal I’ve never seen. The Platypus is the most shy of our amazing animals, and I’ve stitched a couple crunching on grubs in a bubbling creek – hidden by a quiet campsite.

To stitch these, I’ve used the “Bookshelf” Edit from Cottage Garden Threads, my collaboration with CGT. It’s such a joy to feature these local dyers, and the wonderful, very ‘Australian’ palette that they create.

I hope you enjoy creating these little scenes, and their predecessors “Kangaroo Avenue” and “Emu View”. All are available from my Etsy store, as well as threadpacks with just enough to stitch each pair.

And keep an eye out – there’s more to come!
